Gary Havelock (born 4 November 1968 in Eaglescliffe, Yarm) began his racing career at the Middlsbrough bears before moving to Bradford in 1987 with the incredible task of replacing Kenny Carter who died in 1986.

Gary became the European U-21 Speedway Champion in 1987 which set the scene for him to become Bradford's most successful speedway rider. He won the British Speedway Championships in both 1991 and 1992. He then went on to become Overseas Speedway Champion in 1992 before achieving the ultimate, the most memorable night of his life, where in 1992 he was crowned World Speedway Champion.

Gary's heroics didn't end there. In 1995 he won the Division One Riders Championships before helping the Bradford Dukes win the Elite League Title in 1997.

After ten of the most successful and happiest years of Gary's career, he was forced to leave Bradford in 1997 after the council refused to renew the lease to the stadium and the Dukes raced their final race.
